‘anti-utopias’ takes its name from an aspiration to infuse artistic counter-gestures, counter-strategies, and counter-thinking models. It reflects on the intersections between art and culture being able to devise new discourses that challenge societal perceptions and commercial artistic practices in an overly technological society. The name is rooted in the belief that art can rewrite norms and create the conditions for new perceptions and relationships between subjects, objects, representations, and experiences. In alignment with the cultural traditions, the project places artists at the forefront of society’s cultural transformation.
From 2012 to 2017, anti-utopias created a contiguous artistic community and built a world-first thematic artistic platform. The project has featured more than 900 editorial materials and gained an organic international following, with several offline spin-offs designed as opportunities to feature the showcased artists. Throughout its previous iteration, the platform has featured the works of more than 320 well-established and upcoming artists at the time, including Atelier Van Lieshout, Awoiska van der Molen, Benoit Aquin, Claudia Hart, Herwig Turk, Kjell Bjørgeengen, Kurt Hentschläger, Lang/Bauman, Marjolijn Dijkman, Katie Torn, Norimichi Hirakawa, Sophie Kahn, Susan Silas, or Wesley Meuris.
